Off-Topic • Re: [Discussion] What do you do with 10+ years old laptops that still work fine?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 • 8 April • 1 minute

Sell them, maybe? Here in Poland these are still pretty valuable
Unfortunately, here such devices are hardly worth anything. But I guess I will put at least some of them online for a few Euros in order to find someone who can still get any use out of it.
I have problem to throw away half-working 20yr old motherboard, so I think it's a no for me...
Oh well, I at least can limit myself to only care about devices which still do work perfectly fine.
By the way I bought last December a 17-year old EeePC for server management + some basic tasks.
One of our Laptops is actually an Asus EeePC 1015PX (2012), which is a newer generation that has already a maximum of 2 GB RAM and a proper hard disc in it. Originally it was used by my wife, was later replaced by an also now ancient Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus (2017) which she still uses for watching the news because not even the larger replacement battery of the EeePC did last long enough to do sensible work on it any longer. In this regard the battery in the Lenovo Tab is remarkable because it still holds up rather well.
Maybe I have phone whose every of the nine core runs faster than that single core of this netbook, but it's the netbook which doesn't mistreat me.
I often joke that most people have much more powerful mobile processors than I have ever used in any laptop. I don't like mobiles either. Even if I opted for a Samsung Galaxy S3 which is the newest model that runs Replicant. Unfortunately, I needed to switch to /e/OS when I needed to install Signal for work. And now I need to accept the rather slow 2G fallback connection on it because my device doesn't support LTE and our national networks switched off 3G coverage.

Graphical Environments & Desktops • Re: Debian 12 - Gnome switch for bluetooth does not work

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 • 8 April

    Hello,
i tried Debian 12 Live and everything works as expected. I am sure this a "Gnome thingi", especially after do some more checking, i.e.

    Code:

sudo rfkill[sudo] Passwort für reinhard: ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD 0 bluetooth tpacpi_bluetooth_sw unblocked unblocked 2 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
So i decided to backup my data and config's and do a full reinstall, which seems to be really time saving instead of searching failure, which probably is a flaw in Gnome. For my convenience, i also will give xfce a try because i'm really p... off of Gnome, which always seems to be a potential troublemaker.

    All the best
    Reinhard

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 • 8 April

Thank you lovely people for all your help. My beautiful Gnome is back <3

    I successfully restored it by

    Code:

    sudo aptitude install task-gnome-desktop
and refusing the options that were telling me to just not install Gnome. I then did

    Code:

    sudo apt install gnome
which worked! my microphone and speakers are still not working, but fingers crossed restarting helps.

...I can not access any services (ssh, VNC, HTTP) other than through the VPN. As if blocked by Firewall.
Apparently split tunneling isn't enabled on your VPN so all your traffic is going through the VPN adapter.

You didn't mention which VPN you're using but almost all commercial VPN clients will allow you to enable split tunneling and reach machines on your local network. Worth exploring your VPN provider's options.

Run the nurses interface (just type 'aptitude').
    Mark gnome for installation.
Press e to examine why it's broken.
Use . & , to step through the options to resolve.
edit: if you just run it as normal user you can try it out without danger of hosing anything.

edit2: still looks like the BPO libre-office is the issue.

I am an idiot so none of this helped me figure out the issue so I installed aptitude successfully.

RISC-V, though it's market hasn't yet matured, seems to be way to go, especially with mentioned SciFive or MilkV - Way cheaper and some boards look already superior from x86 (i.e. MilkV Pioneer with it's 2GHz 64-core processor)
Currently won't buy anything as I have no funds for that (and my newest PC is barely month-old), but I think I'm safe to decide that my current daily driver is the last x86 ever bought by me
    So?
"Last x86 ever" was an overstatement, but if 'twas a "last backdoored x86 ever", then yeah! Basically got rid of every (but the daily driver) IME/PSP PC I had and since then buy pre-IME / PSP hardware exclusively.

Last December I put my first "improvised" server out of duty in favor of weaker (but backdoor-free + more energy-saving) AMD Hudson-based mITX machine. I haven't got rid of her since she's somewhat a relic of mine (first server of my first self-hosting, after all...) and I'm thinking to put her into service once again, but this time behind PSP-free AMD A-series-based HP sibling as a repo.

And regarding RISC-V... SciFive stuff is still too expensive for me (Albeit there's nice progress, I remember that half year ago Premier P550 was available only in bulk!) and MilkV seems to be vaporware company rather than offering actual hardware*. But I got to know 'bout StarFive, whose boards are actually available and easy to buy so I go one, also that December (VisionFive 2, 4GB version). Due to personal matters and so-called "important" life crap I've yet started really messing with it (As I lack experience with SoCs and had no time to learn use such), but I already used pre-installed Debian on it. Power consumption of ~3W with NVMe drive inserted just rocks.
    * - That was at least the case back in December, to what I remember. Standard form-factor stuff they had were only available as pre-orders which, according to reviews, never actually arrived.

So right now the only problem is my daily driver, but I'll survive with that. At least PSP doesn't own a fully-blown IP stack and since I swapped MSI crapboard for an ASRock mITX it's not that of irritation it used to be.
