Off-Topic β€’ Re: [Discussion] What do you do with 10+ years old laptops that still work fine?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 8 April

But I am digressing: I am troubled by the fact that we do have already about 20 laptops that are over 10 years old and which will probably never be used again despite me knowing that I could do every task I need to do on them perfectly fine without wasting my time by waiting for them to respond. I checked out local social projects that collect hardware to hand them out to poor people but they are only accepting hardware that isn't older than 10 years.
Sell them, maybe? Here in Poland these are still pretty valuable
I am fine with using older hardware, but I can't use several computers at once. Are you happy with throwing away older still working hardware? Or do you have a better solution?
I have problem to throw away half-working 20yr old motherboard, so I think it's a no for me...

By the way I bought last December a 17-year old EeePC for server management + some basic tasks. Maybe I have phone whose every of the nine core runs faster than that single core of this netbook, but it's the netbook which doesn't mistreat me.

General Questions β€’ Re: [Software] What is the correct "mysql-client" package to install in Debian 12?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 8 April

    Hello,
In Debian Desktop 12 if I want to do a remote connection as client to a MySQL Server in other machine in the LAN I need use the mysql command, when it is executed happens the following:

    Code:

manueljordan@vm163:~$ mysql bash: mysql: command not found
    You can see here:
    • MySql - Debian Wiki:
MySQL was replaced by Mariadb in Stretch. This page primarily documents the packages for Jessie and older releases.
To install MariaDB, use the packages mariadb-server and mariadb-client.

Thank you for the tip, ilu. Unfortunately, in my experience the people from the close-by hackerspace use mostly faily modern Apple devices. And also, my private device can make use of libreboot, but none of our older other laptops happen to be models that are supported.

System and Network configuration β€’ Cannot resolve local hostnames

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 8 April

I've searched here and elsewhere online, and can't find a solution to my problem. I have a laptop that has not been used in several days. Today when I turned it on, it was unable to resolve any hostnames on the network. SSH, ping, everything I tried would not work using hostnames to any other machines on the network. All the other machines can resolve hostnames without issues, and this previously worked on the laptop. I can ssh to the laptop from other computers using its hostname. I can use ping, SSH, et al on the laptop by using the network IP address, just not with hostnames. I can't find any issues with any conf files, at least nothing I recognize, and comparing them to the same files on other computers, they seem mostly identical. I can't figure out why this happened to one machine, out of the blue. FWIW, all computers on the network are running Debian.

Beginners Questions β€’ Re: Debian on an old Macbook Pro?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 8 April

When I did my 2007 iMac in 2019 or so, I started with a new empty disk replacing the cooked OEM disk. I started by creating all partitions I expected to need using DFSee. Whether I first installed MacOS or Linux I don't remember. Now I've acquired a 2012 iMac that has Catalina installed using the whole disk. So, it looks like I'll be using MacOS Disk Utility to shrink Mac usage to around half or less, as suggested here, then partition for Linux again using DFSee. When I can't say, due to higher priorities, but it could happen this week.

This question is asked in so many Debian circles/media, but I've yet to see the answer for it or hear of a working system. Care to make a How-To thread if you get it done?

General Questions β€’ Re: [Software] couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 8 April

I had 2 applications produce the error.
Error or warning? There's a huge difference. A full transcript of an actual session would make the problem much easier to understand.

By the way, I never have issues when installing deb files. Double-click in File Manager, which invokes GDebi (runs with elevated privileges).
