      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April

Create the directory as user, for each user. That is the place for *.desktop overrides.

    Code:

     ls ~/.local/share/applicationsfeh.desktop mimeinfo.cache mpv-image.desktop userapp-HandBrake.AppImage-OVUKV2.desktopfirefox-esr.desktop mpv.desktop pkexec-xfce4-terminal.desktop

Off-Topic β€’ Re: [Discussion] What do you do with 10+ years old laptops that still work fine?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April

Lower power devices can be grouped and perform as a 'terminal' to a nearby server. That sounds old school and terrifying but there are modern implementations. Any computer with a working network connection to the server can be made to run a virtual machine full screen that is executing on the server. So a 2GB dual core can handle a modern firefox-esr with 50 tabs open...

Video is doable but through a spice/ssh connection there is a lot traffic, so use the native desktop if it's enough.

Video in Browsers maybe no, but anything less that browsers or video will perform very well. Only very rapid updates to the display are an issue. The network bandwidth needed is >40+MB/s, so on the high side for old wifi but easy for wired gigabit.

You can also forward prompts and programs only without the entire desktop. This is the arena that wayland seems to fail at still and truly leverages the power of X. In the end this topology does require at least one big machine.

As a stand alone device old machines all seem to run doom, and not much else...

Installation β€’ Re: dpkg --get/--set -selections for new install

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April

I'll check the status of dselect, but I believe it is already set as you shown.

Currently I only have one arch configured on the new install, maybe I need to add the i386 arch?

Shure, i attached the complete preseed.cfg file.
Shouldn't this better be reported in the bug tracker?
that would be my first time opening a bug report and i am not quite shure about it. I did a research to see if a bug had already been reported on this topic, but i couldn't find anything. I thought it would be better to ask here first before I rush into anything.

Installation β€’ Re: Install with two encrypted disks

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April

Thanks for the reply ilu, but I've also had problems with Calamares recently because it complains that there's no EFI partition when there definitely is.
For a while I thought that was because it was too small, but bumping it up to 1 GB makes no difference.

General Questions β€’ [Software] Debian 12 place app-launcher *.desktop files

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April

    Hi there

I would like to create a XAMPP shortcut in Debian’s start menu. I have the desktop entry file but just not sure where to place this file. I log into Debian as a root user or a regular user- regular user has no sudo privileges. Apparently the desktop file should be placed in the β€œ~/.local/share/applications” directory but I checked and I have no such directory. Really confused. Hope somebody can shed some light. Thanks

Forum information, requests, and feedback. β€’ Re: [Feedback] Das Prune: Should we purge threads and users in those threads from 2004 - 2010?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April

    Hi

I think that the option, in Quick Links, to find / list unanswered topics could potentially clear a little space, simplify the search and just be tidy.

But it is obviously just a choice I don't have to make, but I can pontificate.
i know it's not related to this topic, but whatever happened to unanswered topics is a mess
I like that idea though when looking at some of the older posts in unanswered topics, which are threads with no replies to them, some of the aged ones are [How-To], [Documentation], [Solved], and [Announcements].

Installation β€’ Audio device selection problems in Debian 12 and Cinnamon

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 6 April β€’ 3 minutes

I have read as many posts as I could find that seem to relate to my problem, even asked ChatGPT, all without success. I am not new to Linux but this is the first time I am trying to do something I guess would be considered custom with audio. I have never had to play around with it before, the defaults just worked. The configuration and learning for audio has been more difficult than I expected though. Here is my problem...

I have an ASUS motherboard with a Soundblaster audio card installed. The motherboard has audio hardware. I intend to use the Soundblaster for HAM radio audio connections and the motherboard audio hardware for regular audio functions. After installing Debian 12.9 and Cinnamon the audio works from the Soundblaster as the default but I would like to change that to the motherboard's Intel PCH audio. I have seen posts that describe how to do this, but none of them has worked for me because the other devices are not listed where I need to change them, or if they are, changing them doesn't work. Some details...

This shows the default, as installed Soundblaster, that works currently and only that one sink is listed by pactl.

    $ pactl list short sinks

    Code:

    122alsa_output.pci-0000_08_00.0.analog-stereoPipeWires16le 2ch 48000HzRUNNING
This shows the full list of ALSA playback devices. I am trying to change the default to the HDA Intel PCH analog device. Card 2 is what the system defaulted to (as installed) and I can't figure out how to use card 0.

    $ aplay -l

    Code:

    **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 2: Audigy2 [SB Audigy 2 [SB0350b]], device 0: emu10k1 [ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback] Subdevices: 31/32 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Subdevice #1: subdevice #1 Subdevice #2: subdevice #2 Subdevice #3: subdevice #3 Subdevice #4: subdevice #4 Subdevice #5: subdevice #5 Subdevice #6: subdevice #6 Subdevice #7: subdevice #7 Subdevice #8: subdevice #8 Subdevice #9: subdevice #9 Subdevice #10: subdevice #10 Subdevice #11: subdevice #11 Subdevice #12: subdevice #12 Subdevice #13: subdevice #13 Subdevice #14: subdevice #14 Subdevice #15: subdevice #15 Subdevice #16: subdevice #16 Subdevice #17: subdevice #17 Subdevice #18: subdevice #18 Subdevice #19: subdevice #19 Subdevice #20: subdevice #20 Subdevice #21: subdevice #21 Subdevice #22: subdevice #22 Subdevice #23: subdevice #23 Subdevice #24: subdevice #24 Subdevice #25: subdevice #25 Subdevice #26: subdevice #26 Subdevice #27: subdevice #27 Subdevice #28: subdevice #28 Subdevice #29: subdevice #29 Subdevice #30: subdevice #30 Subdevice #31: subdevice #31card 2: Audigy2 [SB Audigy 2 [SB0350b]], device 3: emu10k1 [Multichannel Playback] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 2: Audigy2 [SB Audigy 2 [SB0350b]], device 4: p16v [p16v] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
In the GUI when I go to sound settings, the screenshot shows my only two options (Soundblaster digital or analog output) with the Soundblaster analog output selected and working. No options for card 0 that are present in the ALSA devices listing:
    screen-2025-04-05-18-04-11.png
When I run the alsamixer it shows me all three cards but when I use F6 and select card 0 it does not actually change the output. It keeps card 2 as the output default.

    Linux 6.1.0-31-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.128-1 (2025-02-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux
    Description:Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)
    Release:12
    Codename:bookworm
    debian_version: 12.9

I read in a post somewhere that timidity can cause problems and I verified I do not have that installed.

In my extensive debugging attempts, I do have both pulseaudio and pipewire installed. I have tried so many things I'm not sure, but I think pipewire was installed by default and I added pulseaudio to try to get the other audio outputs to work based on reading posts in the forums.
