Beginners Questions • Re: Debian on an old Macbook Pro?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 • 7 April

    Hello,
i can't say anything specific to this macbook, but in general you can just install a normal debian iso, like on any other laptop.
Since every mac model has different hardware, you can search and check the appropriate model here beforehand:
    https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Apple

Some models have issues like the camera not being recognized, hibernation not working, or requiring special proprietary wifi drivers etc.
sometimes there are workarounds, but often not.

There used to be special mac iso images, with additional proprietary drivers, but as far as i know this should no longer be necessary with Debian 12 (correct me if i'm wrong).

I guess just trying it out can't hurt! Especially if you already have a live system running and you don't notice any problems. But if you want to dual boot Linux and Windows on the Mac like on the thinkpad, it might be more complicated, but should also be possible somehow.

General Questions • Re: [Software] Debian 12 place app-launcher *.desktop files

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 • 6 April

    I am new to Linux.
Welcome Home. No, not as root. Root is not required here at all. You found it! ...while I was typing, I'll post anyway for somebody to get something out it...

Either with a standard gui file manager or with mkdir in a user terminal create the directory

    Code:

    mkdir ~/.local/share/applications
    ~/ is short for /home/current_username

A user can copy any root owned *.desktop file from /usr/share/applications and copy the file into ~/.local/share/applications and the file will be owned by the user doing the action. Then edit to your liking.

Xfce for example will give a context menu option (right click) in the user thunar (not root) to edit the desktop files found in /usr/share/applications. Upon saving the file, it will save to ~/.local/share/applications. If the directory does not exist it will be automatically created.

This may not provide a menu entry for the newly created *.desktop until an upgrade cycle invokes a refresh. Manually you can invoke 'update-menus' if the 'menu' package is installed, which will require root.

My bad please excuse me I just found the /.local/share/applications directory. I will go ahead and place the desktop entry in the applications folder and see what happens. The reason I could not find it previously was because I was not prefixing with the ~ . live and learn. Thanks

Testing And Unstable • Re: [Testing - Trixie] preseed issues with crypto

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 • 6 April

No, i am pretty sure those /var/log/Installer/partman logs are complete. The only difference was to install once from USB and once from CD, otherwise same Hardware, same preseed file, same iso file.
btw i used the 'debian-trixie-DI-alpha1-amd64-netinst.iso', maybe I'll check tomorrow if it makes any difference to use the latest daily build testing iso.

Thank you for your response CwF but please take into account that I am new to Linux. Unfortunately I do not understand how to proceed with the information you have provided. If I understand correctly as a root user I would have to create the directory /user/.local/share/applications and then place the desktop entry in the applications folder?

I do know how to place the desktop entry on the desktop, however the shortcut would not appear in the start menu unless I can pin it there somehow after its creation.

[..] Apparently the desktop file should be placed in the “~/.local/share/applications” directory but I checked and I have no such directory. Really confused. Hope somebody can shed some light. Thanks
    The Desktop directory is in:
    • $HOME/Desktop
    also known:
    • ~/Desktop
