Installation β€’ Re: dpkg --get/--set -selections for new install

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 7 April

    Hi Wizard,

--get/set-selections only shows the package name and status (hold, install, deinstall). What does apt-mark showmanual output? (I'm not near my machine for the remainder of the day).

Graphical Environments & Desktops β€’ Re: Debian 12 Xfce - new installation - thunar file manager preferences not usable

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 7 April

Certain windows in XFCE have always been like that. Basically specific application settings not XFCE settings. XFCE provides for re-sizing them (which no one apparently mentions here) by shrinking the window from the top downward then dragging the shrunk window up. Don't go overboard with this method because most of the time XFCE will remember the windows placement and size for the next time you use the offending application and you don't want to create an unusable window. Not an XFCE issue or bug and easily corrected with XFCE window controls and no real way to go default anyway except through application code changes.

System and Network configuration β€’ Direct to modem

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 7 April

My Raspberry pi is connected directly to my modem, (no router). Static IP.
The pi can access the Internet without issue (I can remote in with VPN and Rustdesk).
However, I can not access any services (ssh, VNC, HTTP) other than through the VPN. As if blocked by Firewall.
When I connect on a Router LAN or Wi-Fi, those things work fine.
I believe there is a NAT issue with non-private LAN-typical IP translation, but I could be way off.
One clue may be that <hostname - i> responds with 127.0.1.1, rather than the IP of the LAN.
The PI is loaded with nftables, but that service is not active.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    TIA

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 7 April

OT, but I used dpkg --get/set-selections for years but I find apt-mark showmanual does the same job with considerably less output than dpkg. Works like this -

    Code:

    apt-mark showmanual > /etc/apt/showmanual.list
and then when I'm ready to restore I do

    Code:

    apt-get install < /etc/apt/showmanual.list

Looks like a foreign libre-office is your problem.
    Try removing that first.

Beginners Questions β€’ Re: Debian on an old Macbook Pro?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 7 April

I have no need or desire to keep the MacOS that will lose Apple support this year -- I'd have to learn the Mac interface from scratch and integrate into a completely alien software ecosystem (in which "free software" is largely mythical). The only issue I've seen in limited Live session use is a black screen with mouse cursor on recovering from a closed lid or other things that I think are due to having only 4 GB RAM and no swap with the Live session. I'll have 16 GB tomorrow ($12 for PC3-8500 SODIMMS, specs matched to the 4 GB already in the machine), and with a full install there will be swap space, hopefully that will solve that issue.
