Off-Topic β€’ [Software] Dropbox (app and web site) shows different files on desktop vs. laptop vs. Android app??

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 23 March β€’ 1 minute

Not sure if this is something folks here can help with, but I noticed the other day that a file I was certain was in my Dropbox wasn't accessible from the Android Dropbox app on my Pixel 7 -- so I checked it from my laptop and found that file and several others (visible on my desktop computer either locally or on the web site) were also not showing on the laptop, either the local Dropbox file (as set in Settings for the installed Dropbox client), or on the web site. Files on the laptop's local Dropbox folder are no newer than late October 2024. I installed Debian KDE on the desktop in January of this year, and a few weeks earlier on the laptop.

To be absolutely clear, the Dropbox web site shows different files on different devices when logged in with the same credentials.

Both desktop and laptop machines are running Debian 12.9, kept updated, with KDE Plasma (selected during OS installation a few months ago) and KDE's Dolphin file manager. Installing the 'dolphin-plugins' package (Git and Dropbox integration, among other added features) hasn't changed anything that matters; all my local Dropbox-stored files now show the green checkmark indicating they're up to date, but the files that are present on the desktop machine and the web site it views aren't syncing to the laptop or the web site it sees.

Suggestions on where to get useful tech support for Dropbox welcomed if this isn't something folks here can help with. I'm also going to post on the KDE forum, since Dolphin and its plugins are from KDE, but Dropbox doesn't seem to have a public help site or actual tech support (least of all for "free" users).

General Questions β€’ Re: LibreOffice saved output is not compatable

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 23 March β€’ 1 minute

Using Microsoft formats in my opinion is not a good idea to save LibreOffice files.

When opening a .odt file fails, which error messages do you see? At least on Linux, you can try to open the file via the command line and see what happens.

Did you ever try to use the .fodt format for saving and reloading instead of .odt? .fodt format is functionally identical with .odt, but it is NOT compressed and does not contain a directory tree like .odt does: it is a flat xml text file. But notice that .fodt files are bigger than .odt because they are not compressed, for the benefit of being more robust.

If this does not work, you might also try using the .rtf format. It is also made by Microsoft but it is well documented and designed for data exchange. This format is quite mature and possibly not subject to frequent changes anymore.

EDIT: Almost forgotten: Between versions 6.4 and 7.4, I had compatibility problems when using table styles in 7.4 that were not supported by 6.4. I had to remove them when I wanted to use the files in Writer 6.4. So, don't use new features not being supported in older versions of LibreOffice.

Installation β€’ Re: debian 12 displayport/hdmi screen not working

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 23 March

Sorry, erm, one of my kids tried rebooting it again with the vga monitor turned off, and it now works fine (directly to thedisplayport/ hdmi). I don't know how this "fixed itself", but it works, even with the sound via the hdmi cable (this is Mint 22, with just "quiet splash" in the grub...).

General Questions β€’ Re: LibreOffice saved output is not compatable

Our daily work relies on LibreOffice to run smoothly. As a result, we don't use LibreOffice installed from Debian's repo. Instead, we use the appimage (of a particular version) downloaded from the Document Foundation. Differences between different versions of LibreOffice can be subtle, but sometimes these differences can cause big trouble.

Testing And Unstable β€’ Does the Debian team support the testing branch?

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 23 March

Hello, I read on the Debian website that testing is a distribution created automatically by scripts and is not maintained by the security team.
Does this mean that no one from the Debian team works on testing?
Do the developers only check, test, and support the stable and unstable branches?
    Thank you.

System and Network configuration β€’ Re: Apt update doesn't find newest kernel

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 23 March

As usual you are right, sunrat. It works again. But unfortunately, I don't I understand how I could have messed up my sources in the first place. So I can't tell what I've done wrong ...
There have been only a very small number of reports of this happening so, with such a small sample size, no-one seems to know why it happens yet. At least we know how to fix it.

General Questions β€’ Re: LibreOffice saved output is not compatable

      news.woodpeckersnest.space / forums-debian-net:0 β€’ 23 March

I tested saving in .doc and .docx format as expected this worked fine, but additionally there were no warnings about loss of formatting I had anticipated. In addition, reading the files in Debian LibreOffice there was a warning about a missing hyphenation en-gb which I found in synaptic, installed and this means there are now no warnings.

Anyway I think the problem has been worked around in conclusion to use another output format than .odt such as .docx

Thanks, I shall close the thread shortly.
